at the table

This story woke me from sleep at 4:14 am, I couldn’t wrap my head around why it played in my mind like a movie; allow me to share my early morning revelation with you. I’ll call the town Somewhere, the towns people were having a meeting; some were dressed in fancy clothes and some were dressed very plainly. It was apparent they all knew each other, suddenly the door opened and 1 adult and 2 children entered the room pulling a cart with baskets of vegetables tucked in neat rows. The little girl who appeared to be the spokes person said,” we came a long way to sell these fresh vegetables,we will give you as much as you are willing to pay for.”

They quietly waited for a response, without hesitation the towns people began to inspect the vegetables; such beautiful tomatoes a woman said and handed the little girl 3 quarters. The girl turned to her brother and held up 3 fingers, he gave the lady 3 big ripe tomatoes; as the morning continued the vegetables began to disappear. There was one man left, he said I don’t have any money but I will give you this girl to be your servant for the vegetables you have left; until that moment no one had noticed the small black woman sitting at the table in the corner of the room. For the first time the man with the children spoke, we don’t believe in slavery sir but before he could say another word the little girl said papa we need a cook.

The man motioned to the woman and she stood and walked to him, you will go with them he said; it was done. The vegetables he received were corn, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, green beans and carrots. The little family left the building and started their walk home, the small black woman following silently behind them when something unexpected happened, the girl reached her little hand back and grabbed the woman’s hand; a contrast of skin tone and pulled her into the group, looking in her eyes she said you are family now, there is a seat at the table for you. I thought to myself what a strange way to be waken from sleep. The scene changed and I begin to think about another table.

It had been a very busy day after all it was Passover season and everywhere preparations were being made for the celebration. In the upper room of the house a long table sitting in the middle of the room was laden with bread, wine, figs and dates, roasted lamb, grapes and bitter herbs. The celebration was to commemorate when the children of Israel were passed over by the death Angel of the 1st born in Egypt. Gathered around the table were 13 men, Jesus and the 12 He called to follow Him. This would be the last meal they could sit at the table and share, but; they did not realize it at that moment. In just a few hours He would be taken from them. He was taken, judged, crucified, buried, raised from death and ascended into the Heavenly courts of His Father.

After His resurrection a great change was seen in His disciples, they boldly told the story of His love for the people and His sacrifice for their sins. Many understood and chose to follow His teachings. The table was empty now, He was gone; but, He left the promise to return for those who chose to accept Him in their hearts. The table will be enormous, seating for every soul from every generation who accepted the invitation to sit at the table that was prepared for them by the hands of Jesus the Christ. The question is have you claimed your seat at the table?
